Dr. Edward F. Miller passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018 after a four and a half year battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elaine (nee Seredick), daughters Eileen and Carolyn, sons Timothy (Emma), Brian (Laura) and David (Amy), five grandchildren Kelsi (Thomas), Leana, Aren, Rachel (John), Anya and three great-grandchildren Jackson, Summer and Michael. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Schulz (Stewart) and was an uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, and friend to many.
Ed is predeceased by his parents, Daniel P. and Mary (nee Predina); brothers, Robert V. (Grace) and Daniel A. (Donna); father-in-law and mother-in-law, Michael Seredick and Florence (nee Cabovsky).
Ed was a native of Cleveland and attended Cathedral Latin high school. He earned Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Case Institute of Technology (B.S.E.E. ‘59, Ph.D ‘68) and New York University (M.S.E.E. ‘62.) He began a long career working on the cutting edge of communications technologies at Bell Labs in New Jersey before returning to Cleveland where he spent 32 years at NASA Lewis Research Center. During his tenure at NASA, he was involved with the development and launch of the Communications Technology Satellite, which showed the viability of satellites using high power transmitters paired with small receiving dishes to transmit video and audio. This eventually led to commercial services utilizing the technology, and earned NASA a Technical and Engineering Emmy award in 1987. In his work with NASA, Ed served as a member of the United States delegations to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). After his retirement from NASA, he worked for 10 years as a consultant on satellite communications systems.
Ed traveled to six continents during the course of his career and served as a volunteer with American Field Service (AFS foreign exchange) establishing relationships abroad that have endured for decades. More recently, he volunteered at the West Side Catholic Center.
He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the music of John Denver.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 2PM – 4PM and 6PM – 8PM in the Sunset Chapel, 6245 Columbia Rd., North Olmsted, OH 44070. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 11AM at St. Mary of the Falls Church, 25615 Bagley Rd., Olmsted Falls, OH 44138. Interment immediately following in Sunset Memorial Park.
